Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

At the Capital Lincoln service centre, our goal is to make sure car owners in Regina, Estevan, and beyond have the best maintenance and auto expertise possible. That extends to explaining how synthetic vs conventional oil compare. If you’ve wanted to know the difference, we’ve put together a guide below exploring this. Read on to learn more, then call us at 306-546-6822 or reach out online with any other questions.
What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?
Before comparing synthetic oil vs. regular oil, it’s best to start with some definitions. Conventional, or “regular,” oil is a petroleum-based substance that has been used in internal combustion engines for years to provide lubrication to your vehicle’s internal parts and reduce engine wear. The motor oil you purchase is distilled from crude oil mined from the ground, and it also serves to protect your vehicle’s engine from high temperatures.
What is Synthetic Oil?
As we compare synthetic vs. conventional oil, we move into what makes synthetic oil. A petroleum-based substance like regular oil, this provides enhanced lubrication properties and is far more stable. Synthetic oil oxidizes less easily than conventional oils and is far better at retaining their protective properties. They’re chemically developed from petrochemicals in intensive processes to provide pinpointed properties that make them superior, although they’re a bit more expensive than conventional oils. Synthetic oils also:
- Are less viscous at lower temperatures
- Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
- Provide better protection to critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)
How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?
Beyond conventional and synthetic oils, there are also synthetic blends available. So, how does full synthetic oil vs. synthetic oil fare? They are made up of part synthetic oil and part conventional oil, which helps to reduce the costs of full synthetic and also provides enhanced properties vs. standard conventional oil.
Note: Some vehicles require full synthetic oil, and this can include your Lincoln vehicle. Always review your owner’s manual, or contact one of our service centre experts if you need more information.
